Our Approach to EPMA popular view of Enterprise Performance Management is to start the strategic decision process with "Strategy". However, no CEO would establish a corporate strategy without trying to understand who, how, and where the company makes or loses money. To define a strategy without this understanding can and does lead to organizations failing. A better starting point is to understand where value lies in the both the internal and external opportunities presented to the company.
Once value opportunities have been identified the next logical step is to devise a strategy to exploit those opportunities. After the strategy is in place the next step is to determine how the company is going to execute this strategy via initiatives, projects and specific, owned actions. The output is ultimately the operational plan (S&OP). The next logical step is to "monetize" this plan, i.e to translate this to a financial plan. With both the operational and financial plans in alignment, progress against the strategic objectives can be tracked. This information is then used to "fine tune" the strategy and any strategic or operational initiatives. And the cycle begins again. |
