The Impact of Covid-19 on the role of the Group Financial Controller

Posted by David Jones on Wed, Oct 28, 2020 @ 08:10 AM

On September 29th Column5 hosted a quarterly meeting of the UK100 Group Financial Controllers (GFC) forum on the web. This is a quarterly meeting that Column5 hosts to give GFC’s from the UK’s largest listed Companies opportunity to hear from experts about topics of mutual interest, network and share experiences. This meeting was to understand how Covid-19 was impacting their role as GFC’s, how well prepared they felt when the lock-down arrived in late March 2020 and what they plan to change going forward, particularly given the likelihood of more home working over the next 6 months due to Covid-19, and whether there will be permanent changes to their role as GFC going forward.

Key Take-Aways:

Key elements of the discussions are set out below and make an interesting read, but everyone agreed that the key points to take away were:

Helping DNB ASA Achieve Excellence and Efficiency in Financial Consolidation and Reporting

Posted by David Jones on Thu, Nov 17, 2016 @ 11:11 AM

At Column5 our mission is to work closely with our clients to achieve excellence in Enterprise Performance Management (EPM). A core business process embraced by EPM is financial consolidation and external regulatory reporting. Every listed company has to perform this process at least once a year and many perform it quarterly if local regulation requires or even monthly (assuming they have integrated their financial and management reporting, one of our key recommended best practices).

Momentous Events in London this June - Even for SAP EPM users

Posted by David Jones on Mon, Jun 20, 2016 @ 08:06 AM

June is a month of momentous events in London. While those events unfold, SAP BPC, FC and EPM users will also gather in London on 30th June and 1st July to share in their own very special event.

June 2016 in London will see a momentous celebration, commemoration and decision. The people of Britain will be celebrating the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest serving monarch and a rock of stability through the last 7 decades as the British Head of State. They will be commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, a horrific episode in World War I which saw tens of thousands of European citizens killed and wounded for no obvious or significant reward. And finally, the people of Britain will be making a dramatic and historic decision in their referendum on membership of the European Community. These events all have their own special significance for European history and Europe’s future and we will all be watching them unfold with great interest.

Would Napoleon have Won Waterloo if he had Used SAP BPC?

The SAP EPM value liberation army is on the march!

18th June 1815 was a historic day in the history of Europe. It’s the day that two great armies lined up to determine Europe’s future. Who would win? Napoleon and his magnificent “Armée du Nord”, or the armies of the Seventh Coalition and the Prussians, under the Duke of Wellington and von Blücher?

Tales of an Englishman Abroad Part II – or “What I Learnt at the APJ EPM Summit”

Posted by David Jones on Fri, Mar 27, 2015 @ 14:03 PM

After the outlandish but ultimately very successful experience of our EPM Summit in Las Vegas, it was time to move on to the next event in our round of bringing together the SAP BPC user community across the globe. This time I travelled to Makati, one of the cities making up metropolitan Manila in the Philippines, for our APJ EPM Summit.

Tales of an Englishman Abroad – or “What I Learnt at the EPM Leadership Summit”

Posted by David Jones on Tue, Mar 03, 2015 @ 08:03 AM

The beauty of being an Englishman and being invited to present at a conference in Las Vegas is that you get a chance to indulge in all the stereotypical views of the worst excesses of the USA. Yes, Las Vegas is big, brash, and bold. There is glamour and sparkle everywhere you turn.  There are one-arm bandit machines everywhere (at the airport, at the car rental centre and even at the garage - sorry gas station), and yes, food portions are huge and the toll it takes on some US residents is clear to see. But, for all that, you just love the place because of its excesses; your senses are bombarded every minute and just for a few days it really is fun, even if, like me, you don’t gamble.

Ready for the Year-End Close? Conduct the Orchestra and Make Beautiful Music

Posted by David Jones on Tue, Dec 23, 2014 @ 09:12 AM

Christmas is almost here and some of you have no doubt already started your Q4/year-end close processes. The question for today’s blog is, are you really ready for your year end? For many, the close process is still tough and painful, while others ease through the year end with a well-rehearsed, automated, finely tuned and well-managed process. That’s pretty clear from our Close Cycle Rankings Research for 2014, where the fastest of the 500 largest companies in the world to report global consolidated results managed to consolidate, close and report in just 12 elapsed days after the year end, while the slowest took an astonishing 120 elapsed days.
