SAP released the latest update to the Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) roadmap on March 19th.  Although I won’t go into great detail on the roadmap or discuss every new feature, I will provide high level overview of the highlights as I see them.

I've been implementing planning solutions for many years. One of the areas that we often find on the agenda for a planning application design meeting -- or, if it's not on the agenda, something we will bring up -- is the question of whether the organisation has a separate budgeting cycle or whether the budget has been subsumed into a rolling forecast process.

If you listen to the world's largest vendors of storage systems, the amount of data on the planet is doubling every few hours or every few weeks. Regardless of who you believe, by the time you are finished reading this article, there will be significantly more data on the planet than when you started reading. Retailers are creating sales and shipping data. Healthcare organizations are creating patient data and staffing records. Banks are producing financial transaction data and managing foreign currency fluctuations. Scientific organizations are creating test data in the lab. You get the point: More data is inevitable. There are two major aspects any organization must consider. First, you have to get the data. It needs to be collected, stored, managed, and backed up. Second, you have to use the data. This is where analytics comes in, and has been a "top of the house" information technology discipline since the dawn of computing.

Beyond Spreadsheets: The Future of EPM

Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) has come a long way from solutions that were first seen almost two decades ago. Of course, it could be argued that the first “EPM Technology” was the spreadsheet—dating back more than 30 years now.
